Current State 12 Oct 2008

Showing the cage potatoes, artichokes (in white recycled pot) beans (in green), and the garden bed. Companion plants such as nasturtium and marigolds are seeded along the edge of the beds to help with insect control. I will go into this more within ISP and companion planting.
4 rows, l-r: Loose leaf lettuce, carrots, beetroot, tri-colour silverbeet. Peas grow along the back (northside) of the bed in this section. The beds were made from found timber in the cellar of the house. The bulk of it was for an old set of stair runners no longer needed. The metal "windscreen" is an off-cut scrap of roofing tin.

The smaller garden. Most in here are still small seedlings, so difficult to see. This bed has rocket, chives, 2 brussel sprouts, rhubarb, a row of greenfeast peas, 2 vining pumpkins that will be guided onto the rockery over the end, purple climbing peas, being guided up onto the garden arch, and various herbs. The tomatos grow in a tomato bag between the two beds, at the foot of a garden arch. This will be supplemented with chook wire as the tomatos need further support.

The cloche supports are made from 13mm irrigation tubes with cut bamboo stakes in the ground that the tubes are put on. Bamboo is also used for the length braces. The white container is a 20L jug that the top was cut off of to use as a planter. I will have a section on caged potatoes seperate. This is a great way to grow a good crop of potatoes in a confined space. The cage is apx 50cms. in diameter and 60 cm tall. This can be done on even a small terrace in an urban setting.

Overview of the garden in it's current state. 12 Oct 2008. The larger bed is in the foreground, the composter is in the background. Outside the bed are various plants including groundcover thyme and oregano as well as flowering companion plants such as nasturtium.
